GREENPOINT TERMINAL GALLERY XYZ Painting space and objectness, is transformed and inverted through the hand manipulation of all of these artists. The conversation between these works is at once visceral and intuitive, but also astute in their decisive tone. Thingness is explored through painted forms, as well as treatment of supports, and reference to language. Echoing shapes of the body and architecture, each of these artists explores notions of totality and simultaneity. The ephemeral screen-time we put in daily, is countered by a surprising approach to the physicality of the paintings. Here we are presenting artists that use an idiosyncratic approach, building as they accumulate motifs and content. Vernacular references are hard to spot but associations of digital layering, signage are prevalent. Samuel T Adams uses the interior of stretcher bars to create structures with dictate the formation of his paintings. Leaning on printmaking processes, his geometries retain an organic quality. Vanessa Maltese approaches her paintings sculpturally, repeating frames and fragments within each other are tightly rendered in muted colors. Zoe Nelson’s paintings use the surface and support (verso), in combination with saturations of color and mark making. The hand is evident in the paint and specific moments carefully cut out, revealing painted structures beneath. Margaux Ogden’s works employ restricted hued palettes, where doodle linework leads the viewer around the painting tripping overloaded sometimes plain and sometimes emotional sentence fragments. Eric Shaw’s works have a digital affectation, using a system of motifs and color relationships that suggest continuous change and movement. Each painting begins with it’s own set of arbitrary rules, that build into a unique system. Samuel T Adams received his MFA from School of Visual Arts in New York in 2009. He recently had a solo show in March 2016, “By Night With Torch and Spear” at Dutton, New York. His site-specific solo show at Dutton, New York in 2015 “Agapē Agape”received outstanding critical attention. Adams’ work has been included in numerous group exhibitions including D&F Gallery, New York; Left Field, San Luis Obispo; Fitzroy Gallery, New York; ZieherSmith, New York; Regina Rex, New York; and Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati. Recent press includes pieces in Frontrunner Magazine, PAPER Magazine, Hyperallergic, Artinfo, and The L Magazine. Vanessa Maltese (b. 1988, Toronto, Canada) holds a BFA from OCAD University and is the National Winner of the 2012 RBC Canadian Painting Competition. Maltese currently lives and works in Toronto, Canada. Zoe Nelson received an MFA from Columbia University and a BA from Barnard College. Solo exhibitions include the Cleve Carney Art Gallery (Glen Ellyn, IL), Western Exhibitions (Chicago), Lloyd Dobler Gallery (Chicago), and Roots & Culture Contemporary Art Center (Chicago, two-person). Her recent solo exhibition at the Cleve Carney Art Gallery was selected as a Critic’s Pick on Artforum.com, and additional exhibitions include Greenpoint Terminal Gallery (Brooklyn), McCormick Gallery (Chicago), the Elder Gallery (Lincoln, NE), Usable Space (Milwaukee), NurtureART (NYC), and The Fisher Landau Center for Art (NYC). Nelson has attended funded residencies through ACRE (WI), Ox-Bow (MI), The Lighthouse Works (Fishers Island, NY) and Yale University’s Norfolk Summer Program (CT). Nelson currently resides in Chicago and teaches in the Art, Media & Design Department at DePaul University. Margaux Ogden was born in Boston, MA and raised in Vermont and coastal Massachusetts. She received a BA from Bard College in 2005, a Post-Baccalaureate in Fine Arts from Brandeis University in 2010, and an MFA in Painting from Boston University in 2012. She attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2011 and participated in DNA Residency in Provincetown, MA in 2015. Her solo shows include Down the Rabbit Hole at Freight & Volume in New York City and Chekhov's Gun at ltd Los Angeles. Margaux currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Eric Shaw (B. 1983) is a painter living in Brooklyn, NY.
